Former Geylang Fire Station

The former Geylang Fire Station was a functioning fire station from 1929 to 2002. Strategically located at a cross junction, the fire engines could promptly head in any required direction during emergencies via the 5 big red doors.

I have passed this building countless times and have often wondered what lies behind the building currently. Recently, with some time to kill as I was at Paya Lebar Quarter across the road, I decided to pay the building a visit.

From what I could see, it currently houses four different entities - a fitness centre, a Muay Thai training centre, a little cake shop and a creative agency.

The building has been gazetted as a conservation building in 2007 and retains much of the facade, former courtyard as well as the annex building which was probably the living quarters of the fire station staff.

It was a quick 45 minute visit and I was happy to have an interesting set of photos for keeps.

This Muay Thai instructor below was not too pleased at first when he saw me randomly photographing the training pads left out to sun. He thought I was some kind of an enforcement officer.

"What's up bro? You taking photo for what?" his voice boomed as he opened the glass door and appeared from behind the tinted doors. He appeared irritated.

My defence mechanism kicked in as soon as I saw his lean mean Muay Thai body. I thought I would be beaten to pulp if I did not give him the 'right' answer.
