Chinese Puppet Show

A Disappearing Act in Singapore

Chinese puppet shows in Singapore are now mainly performed as an offering to Taoist Gods during specific festive dates on the lunar Chinese calendar.

In this particular troupe, it consists of three lady puppeteers, a keyboardist as well as another musician playing the accompanying cymbals, drums and beat. Unlike Chinese opera which involves singing, Chinese puppet shows involve story telling with the puppets by the ladies in Hokkien (a type of Chinese dialect).

The three ladies seemed to be just bantering while pulling the strings of the puppets but they were actually telling a story. Even though the audience cannot see them from the front, they were indeed quite animated as they spoke and acted out the scenes.

Sadly, there was not a single human audience watching the show. I assume it was just the Gods watching and enjoying the puppet show.

No audience, no problem. It didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the performers one bit. Cliché as it sounds, the show had to go on. The show still went on cue and they were signalling to one another as they moved the puppets around. No score sheets but the 2 musicians coordinated with each other on opposite sides of the stage as if linked via telepathy. The keyboardist switched between the keyboard and trumpet seamlessly as and when the musical parts called for either instrument. Everything went on like clockwork.

Just as swiftly as the final scene ended, the ladies quickly disassembled the heads from the puppets and put them into the storage boxes. The musicians were also equally quick in packing up their instruments and making a quick exit.

Curtains closed (for the night).

The End.
