Changdeokgung Palace (Palace of Prospering Virtue) is one of five grand palaces built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). Today, only about 30% of the original structures remain after the heavy damage inflicted during the Japanese occupation (1910-1945).

We were there quite early and the palace grounds was tranquil and quiet. The light snowfall the night before also made the place look even prettier.

We booked tickets for the Secret Garden tour and had a guide who took us through the gardens.

The Buyongjeong (Lotus Flower Pavilion) is the first structure to greet us in the Secret Garden. It sits next to the Buyongji pond which was frozen over during our visit.

The Juhanmu (Place Open to the Universe) is a 2-storey building which sits on the other end of the pond.

Yeonghwadang is another pavilion set to the east of the pond.

Aeryeongjeong Pavilion is a square pavilion located at the edge of the Aeryeongji Pond. The north facing pavilion allows for more light for reading and contemplation. The name of the pond means 'Love of Lotuses' and was a favourite spot of many kings.

The Bulromun Gate, which is the entrance to the pond, is said to bless anyone walking under it with long life and good health.
